How to take the least risks for the greatest rewards – developing your dental marketing strategy

To get the most out of your 1stDDS.com strategy, you will need to understand what geographic market you should be in and what portal listings you should be registered on. Let’s start with a geography lesson.

Geographical Marketing Radius (GMR)

Your GMR is the distance, in miles surrounding your practice, from which you can expect to draw a particular type of patient (Sedation Dentistry, Cosmetic Dentistry, Implant Dentistry, etc.)

For example, if you were targeting general or family patients, in a suburban market you would generally have a GMR of five to seven miles surrounding your practice. However, if yours is a rural practice, your GMR may extend in a circle of fifty to seventy-five miles surrounding your office, while an urban facility may have a drawing radius of only one to two miles. Your GMR can vary dramatically by the type of patient you are targeting.

Creating your Geographic Marketing Profile

Your 1stDDS.com Campaign Consultant will have already established an initial Geographic Marketing Profile based on your high-value new patient markets, city targets and your practice geographical designation as an Urban, Suburban or Rural.

Below is a snapshot of how we automatically build your Geographic Marketing Profile. During your Activation Appointment, you will be able to review and change your Profile in total, or selectively by target market / portal listing.

Premium Market Listing vs. Standard Zip Code Listing – what you must know

Premium Listings:

Premium listings are registered by city and automatically include all the zip codes found in that city. For example:

There are several advantages of selecting a Premium Listing:

  • When a dental consumer searches to find a dentist, the Premium Listings are displayed first.
  • Only a limited number of Premium Listings are available for each city. This ranges from just two listings in the smaller cities to up to ten in the large metropolitan areas
  • Premium listings are a way to position your practice ahead of the pack to maximize your return on your Internet marketing investment. They are rotated randomly so that all registered doctors have an equal chance to be at the top of the listings.
  • Doctors who register for Premium positioning are eligible for our “Doctor of the Month” program where they can be featured on their targeted portal with their photo, biography and a short article on a topic in their area of expertise.
  • Premium listings are very cost-effective. They start at just $5 and increase based on population. They include all of the zip codes in that city.
  • Premium city listings also include all Non-Residential zip codes for a city. Non-Residential zip codes are usually assigned to large office buildings with thousands of office workers. These are a goldmine of potential patients who are often looking for a dentist close to their workplace.

Premium listings are available on 1stDDS.com on a “first-come-first-served” basis. Your IDA / 1stDDS.com assistant will do her best to secure a Premium listing in your top Priority City Market for each of your new patient marketing campaigns.

She will then try to secure Premium listings for your second through fifth city markets based on availability and the amount of Marketing Credit Dollars you have remaining for each specific new dental patient marketing campaign. You will have the option to adjust (reduce / expand) upon her initial choices before your account is activated. You are always in control.

Standard Listings:

1stDDS.com websites are unique in that they allow you to pinpoint your target market down to the local zip code and population level. When you enter your Geographic Marketing Radius (GMR), you are provided with a listing of all the zip codes and their populations surrounding your practice. For example:

In this example, you can see that the zip codes are listed in the order of increasing distances from your practice. You can also see that San Rafael includes 5 different zip codes in the “Standard Markets” listings, whereas in the “Premium Markets” listing, the 5 zip codes are amalgamated into one listing for the entire city.

A Standard Listing allows you to target a specific type of patient with pinpoint precision. You may then pinpoint the exact parts of the surrounding community from which you want to draw a specific type of patient. For example, if you’re marketing for denture patients on 1stDentures.com in a suburban market, you probably have a GMR of about 15 miles. Your GMR search results would list all zip codes and their populations in a 15-mile circle around your office. However, let’s say you know that the north side of your town has three major retirement centers. You can then pinpoint just those zip codes with heavy concentrations of elderly patients and ignore the zip codes in the new family development on the south side of town. Using the zip code and population statistics from your GMR search, you can pinpoint your marketing dollars where they will have the best effect and not waste them in an area where they will have little effect.

As a second example, let’s say you are targeting suburban orthodontic patients for braces on 1stBraces.com. Your GMR would be 15 miles. However, a major river divides your town. You know that people from the other side of the river generally don’t travel to your side of town. Your most cost-effective marketing solution is to target only those zip codes on your side of the river.

Non Residential Listings:

  • Non-Residential Listings are zip codes where there are no residents but a tremendous number of office workers. They are usually found in major urban office centers or suburban office parks.
  • These Non-Residential Listings are often gold mines of new patients. Many times a single building will have its own zip code with over 5,000 office workers. These workers may live in the suburbs, but traditionally prefer to see a dentist convenient to their work location.
  • Non-Residential Listings are perfect for doctors with practice in a large office building or commercial center.
